College of Interhuman Symbiotic Studies

Mission and Philosophy

Our aim is to help students develop a symbiotic perspective towards other people, cultures, and the environment. A symbiotic approach towards life while not unique to Japan is deeply linked to traditional Japanese aesthetics and beliefs. It permeates many aspects of contemporary life in Japan. A symbiotic perspective recognizes the importance of people developing positive relationships with each other despite differences. It involves expanding a common ground while respecting diversity. A symbiotic perspective also recognizes that creativity often emerges from competition and tension between humans themselves, and between humans and the environment. Through constructivist approaches to learning (e.g. problem-based learning, project-based learning, task-based learning) students gain practical skills applying symbiotic frameworks and concepts to contemporary social, political, economic, and environmental issues at the local and global levels. These skills will prepare students for the 21st century where the ability to compromise and coexist with one another, and the environment is more paramount than in anytime in recent history.


What is Project-based Learning (PBL)?

Our one semester PBL courses offer students the opportunity to pursue challenging learning projects outside the classroom that have real-life applications.

Thirty project-based learning courses are offered, mainly during spring semester, in the third year of the curriculum.

These real-life projects combine off-campus learning with on-campus teacher-student consultation. Project-based content includes artwork and video creation, fieldwork overseas and in local communities, international exchange activities, short-term and long-term internships, and study abroad programs.
